Here's how I see it. Microsoft makes the original, then Apple makes it a whole lot better and more user friendly. In some cases, like the iPhone and iPod, Apple makes it first, and a whole lot better than anything else out there. But for the free Linux distributions, it's harder to use, more flexible, more obscure, and most importantly, free.
Don't get me wrong, my MacBook has brought me the most carefree and least frustrating computer experience I've ever had, but in a few years when it's time to move on, I'll be eying the newest Asus eeePC and whatever Linux distribution strikes my fancy.
