Tropophilia: There Is Comfort In The Sound

    I work best in absolute, 100% dead silence. I get distracted easily by even the slightest sounds, especially if they aren't constant. Constant, subtle sounds are okay - I typically forget that they exist. But if I notice them at any point, my focus can potentially be shattered, depending on how tired I am.

    My office is often abuzz with noise, especially during busier times (such as this week as everyone is in a frenzy preparing for our upcoming international conference this weekend). I tend to get pretty distracted, and often have to go on a midday run, either for exercise or for ice cream. Don't think I could go for white noise - I think I prefer green noise, such as in the basement of the library.

    Late to the game on this, but I got so used to sleeping with my fan on last summer that I invested in a sound machine--white noise is awesome. I use Noise on my computer when I need to get some serious writing done. Silence can be a real downer when you're trying to productive. Weirdly, I find white noise to also make me feel more comfortable--maybe because it sounds like an air conditioner? Bah.

    So I hesitated to share this, but now that Rachel has outed herself as a white-noise sleeper I think I need to come clean too. I don't sleep very well unless I have a fan or other white noise...so much so that I too have a white noise sound machine I use occasionally at night.

    I mostly listen to music while I work, though I'm going to give the white noise generators a try.

    One of my roomies in College had a white noise machine. I've never leaned one way or another. But now that I'm living right next to a heavily-traveled CSX freight route, I get train noise all night free of charge. 2 trains in the past hour.

    You can also use a White noise machine in the office to mask out distracting noises and increase concentration.
